When Mike Houlahan speaks, people listen. 

 

One of the most experienced FX market professionals in New Zealand, Mike started at ASB in 1985 as an interest rate trader and was instrumental in the establishment of ASB Treasury. 

 

When the market was deregulated in the mid-80s, Mike foresaw the emergence of a burgeoning foreign exchange market, and in 1993 he launched his FX brokerage, Tuatara Management. It was here Mike envisaged new ways of servicing businesses, something that has been a hallmark of his career. 

 

In 2016, having grown the business substantially, Mike sold Tuatara to foreign exchange company HiFX (now XE.com). He continued to work there as a senior corporate FX dealer for nearly five years, before joining Electus Financial in 2021.

 

Mike’s peerless expertise, pragmatic nature and rock-solid dependability are part of the reason his Electus Financial team-mates call him ‘Uncle Mike.’ Having run a business for a long time himself, he has a deep understanding of the risks and day-to-day challenges his clients face, giving him the rare ability to think clearly from the client’s perspective.

 

Whether through team sport, business or a hearty conversation over coffee, Mike is passionate about participation, a quality he’s sought to instil in his three nearly grown-up children. He spent years playing rugby but now prefers to unwind on the golf course, where he no longer gets angry at his game but relishes having fun.
